Publishing Tips for Black Authors

By Ola Awonubi Author of “The Marriage Monitoring Aunties’ Association,” “A Nurse’s Tale,” and creator of The Ultimate Writers Guide.

Why Our Stories Matter

Publishing as a Black author isn’t just about getting words on a page—it’s about reclaiming space, rewriting narratives, and building legacy. Whether you’re writing romance, historical fiction, or faith-based reflections, your voice is valid, your story is needed, and your journey will encourage so many others.

Tip 1: Start with Purpose, Not Permission

Before you chase agents or ISBNs, ask: Why am I writing this?   Your “why” becomes your compass. For me, writing A Nurse’s Tale was about honouring hidden Black history. My last book - The Marriage Monitoring Aunties’ Association was a love letter to every woman navigating singleness with grace. Purpose fuels perseverance.

Tip 2: Know Your Publishing Path

There’s no one-size-fits-all. Here’s how to choose:

Path

Pros

Considerations

Self-Publishing

Full creative control, faster release

You handle editing, design, and marketing

Traditional Publishing

Wider distribution, industry credibility

Requires agent, longer timelines

Hybrid Models

Blend of both

Often involves upfront investment

I’ve self-published some titles and built systems that work for me—and for my readers.

Tip 3: Make Amazon Work for You

Amazon isn’t just a bookstore—it’s an algorithm. Here’s how to use it:

  • Keywords: Use terms like “Black romance,” “faith-based fiction,” “African historical fiction”

  • Categories: Choose underused but relevant ones to boost visibility

  • Author Page: Cross-promote your books, digital products, and events

  • Bundles: Pair books with workbooks or devotionals (e.g., Singles Package + Affirmations for Singles)

Tip 4: Build Your Brand Before Your Book Drops

Your audience should know your values before they know your title.

Use:

  • Substack for storytelling and reflection

  • Instagram/LinkedIn for behind-the-scenes and reader engagement

  • Email sequences to nurture loyalty and offer exclusive bonuses

Your brand is the bridge between your book and your reader’s heart.

Tip 5: Community Is Currency

Visibility grows through connection.

  • Host instagram lives with other authors

  • Collaborate with other creatives

  • Reward loyalty with bonuses, shoutouts, and early access

I treat my readers as partners—not just purchasers. That’s how you build a resilient writing community.

🔄 Tip 6: Automate What You Can, Personalize What You Must

Use AI and automation to:

  • Schedule emails and social posts

  • Segment your audience by interest

  • Track engagement and optimize your launch

But never lose the personal touch. A handwritten note, a voice memo, or a prayerful affirmation goes further than any algorithm.

Tip 7: Create Products That Empower Others

Your book is just the beginning.

  • Turn your writing process into a digital guide

  • Create interactive trackers for aspiring authors

Publishing isn’t just about selling—it’s about serving.

Final Thought: Publish Boldly

You don’t need permission or perfection to be published. You need clarity, courage, and community.
